More than 200 people attended the 25th Annual Voorhees Supply Chain Conference April 28, 2017, breaking attendance records!
This year’s conference, The Future of Supply Chain, was held in the Sukup End Zone Club at Jack Trice Stadium. It was the perfect venue to host the event, which drew supply chain professionals, faculty, and students from seven states, representing 75 companies. Experts discussed technology advances in drones, delivery optimization, automated truck driving, 3D printing, and more.
“We are taking this conference to a new level, striving to offer the premier supply chain conference in the Midwest,” said Raisbeck Endowed Dean David Spalding. “This is the perfect time for us to grow this conference. In the past two years, our supply chain management program and faculty research efforts have received multiple national and global rankings. We couldn’t be more excited to share this energy with those who attend our annual conference.”
Jack Levis, senior director of industrial engineering at United Parcel Service (UPS), kicked-off the day with an engaging presentation on delivery optimization and drone technology that UPS is using to reduce cost and emissions, while increasing productivity of their services.
Next, Michael Cammisa, vice president of safety policy and connectivity at American Trucking Associations discussed the advancements of automated driving and the impacts it has not only on the supply chain but also on government policy across the nation.
Lunch speaker Chris Jorgensen, senior associate athletics director for operations at Iowa State University Athletics, held an engaging question-and-answer session focused on the conference venue itself – the Sukup End Zone Club.
Lastly, Eric Johnson, senior staff engineer for John Deere, captivated attendees with his topic of 3D printing and its impact on future supply chains.
“We are already looking for ways to improve this conference next year,” Spalding said. “We sent a survey to all attendees seeking their input and suggestions for topics they would like to see on next year’s schedule. Our goal is to provide the most meaningful day of professional development possible.”

The Voorhees Supply Chain Conference was established by alumni and friends of Iowa State University to honor the career of Professor Emeritus R. Dale Voorhees and to provide industry leaders a premier conference in their field. Professor Voorhees passed away on May 24, 2009.
Professor Voorhees was an Iowa State University teacher and researcher for twenty years. As a teacher, Voorhees displayed an uncommon talent for integrating theory with practice. Industry practitioners were frequent visitors to his class, sharing their experiences, knowledge, and insights with his students.
The Voorhees Supply Chain Conference began as a supply chain executive-in-residence program, with distinguished leaders in the supply chain field visiting the College of Business to interact with students, faculty, and making a presentation to the university community. For its tenth anniversary in 2002, the program was expanded to a full conference. This format continues today.
