(Ames, Iowa — Wednesday, October 31, 2018) After carefully reviewing project proposals from 11 teams and narrowing it to three finalists in June, one design-build team has been selected for a major expansion of the Gerdin Business Building.

BNIM of Des Moines and Story Construction of Ames will design and build the much-needed expansion to the Ivy College of Business. Located on central campus at Iowa State University, the Gerdin building will have an approximately 45,000 square-foot addition added to the side facing Wallace Road.

“We look forward to working with Story Construction and BNIM. Our plan is to begin construction as soon as weather permits in the spring,” said Raisbeck Endowed Dean David Spalding, who anticipates completion in 2020.

“We are committed to creating an expansion to the Gerdin Business Building that is centered on community and focused on the student experience,” said Kevin Nordmeyer, principal at BNIM.

The two companies have worked together in the past and bring a seamless approach to the project.

“We are ecstatic to continue this work of design and construction with our team members, the university staff and the Ivy College of Business team to create an amazing expansion of space for students, faculty, and visitors to the Gerdin Business Building,” said Mike Espeset, president of Story Construction.

The need for the building addition has never been greater.

“We are fortunate to have a beautiful, modern facility,” Spalding said. “Unfortunately, we have outgrown this space. Our enrollment numbers were up again this fall. We now have 4,931 students, making us the fastest growing college at Iowa State University for the fourth year in a row.”

Having more students at the college leads to hiring more faculty and staff.

“In addition, we continue to offer new programs, such as entrepreneurship and actuarial science, which benefit students and their future employers,” Spalding said.

Classes in Gerdin are held from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, requiring many students to have classes late into the evening. Students also take classes in other buildings on campus since classrooms are booked in the Gerdin Business Building. Limited space results in less flexibility for students, clubs and organizations. Many members of the faculty are using temporary office space in the Memorial Union.

The estimated cost for the addition is $28 million. The building addition will be designed with students in mind. It will include more classrooms, computer classrooms, a multi-purpose space, and study areas. Additional space for faculty and staff offices is also included.

A $7 million commitment from the Gerdin Charitable Foundation has made this expansion possible, Spalding said.

“The Gerdin family are long-time leaders, friends, and donors to the college. Ann and her late husband, Russell Gerdin, provided the foundational gift for the college’s facility – the Gerdin Business Building – in 2001. The couple established Heartland Express, a nationwide company specializing in logistics and transportation, with headquarters in North Liberty, Iowa.”

At the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business, we offer a wide variety of programs to maximize student potential, connect students with professionals through case competitions, interactive learning, study abroad, internships, and ultimately successful employment. We continuously add valuable programs that benefit students and their future employers, including an undergraduate major in actuarial science, a master of real estate development, and an executive MBA — all beginning in fall 2019. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accredits the college. Less than 5 percent of the world’s business programs have earned this credential.
