Iowa Small Business Development Centers

The Iowa SBDC’s 2011 Neal Smith Entrepreneur of the Year award winner, Timothy Greene, President of Quality Machine of Iowa, Inc., Audubon, was chosen as the 2012 Iowa Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.  Tim will be presented with his award at the SMART Economic Development Conference on May 3rd in Des Moines. As the 2012 Iowa Small Business Person of the Year, Tim will also represent Iowa at National Small Business Week ceremonies in Washington, D.C. on May 20-26, 2012, where he will compete for the national award.

The Kirkwood Community College Small Business Development Center was a vital part of the Cedar Rapids Business Success Initiative, a/k/a the Business Long Term Recovery Initiative, as their primary source for subject matter experts on finance, marketing, planning, and other necessary business recovery advice, and for teaching educational workshops. The Initiative worked closely with Cedar Rapids businesses in the aftermath of the 2008 flood. The Initiative was recently honored by the Cedar Rapids Council for its hard work and dedication to area small businesses. The following excerpt was published in the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance e-connection newsletter dated March 9, 2012:

Business Long Term Recovery Initiative Praised for Efforts
The Business Long Term Recovery Initiative, also known as the Business Success Initiative, was recently honored by the Cedar Rapids City Council for its work with local businesses in the aftermath of the 2008 flood.

The team was established in January 2010 by the former Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the City of Cedar Rapids. The program was the first case management program that focused on business disaster recovery nationwide. Led by Bob Harschnek and Scott Swenson, the team worked with 565 businesses by offering educational workshops, resources for funding assistance, business efficiency services and more. Their efforts assisted with the return of 82% of our flooded businesses - well exceeding the national average of just 45% of businesses that return from a disaster.

The group has also been recognized by Steven G. Smith, director-Office of Disaster Planning, U.S. Small Business Administration. Smith lauded the group's efforts, noting he has not seen any group orchestrate a better plan for long term recovery than the Cedar Rapids group. He said the work the team accomplished is a case study on what a "whole community" can do.
The Initiative was disbanded December 31, 2011, when federal funding ran out. A hearty ‘job well done!’ to Kirkwood SBDC Regional Director Al Beach and his team for their devoted work in helping so many Cedar Rapids businesses to recover.
