Professor Shadle retired at the early age of 58 in 1970 after 21 years at Iowa State University. Professor Shadle had a tremendous impact on Jim through his mentoring, leadership and friendship. As graduation approached in the spring of 1967, Jim Frein had no intention of accepting an offer he'd received from the Harris Bank in Chicago. He wanted to work in investments, not banking. Then Professor Harry Shadle set him straight. "He said, Jim, you have to open your eyes a little bit. You 'II have plenty of opportunities in a big city bank that you wouldn't have here," Frein chuckled. "He was right." Harry Shadle's interest in and affection for students are what motivated Jim and Ann ShaffFrein to announce a major gift to the Harry L. Shadle Endowed Scholarship, a renewable award for full-time undergraduate finance majors in the College of Business. The scholarship is designed for students who have potential but need "encouragement and guidance." After all, guidance and encouragement were Harry Shadle's legacy.

In addition to the courses he taught in industrial administration, Shadle was a popular advisor to numerous campus organizations, from the VEISHEA Committee to the Greek Week Central Committees to Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. "Harry inspired and pushed students -especially those who needed special encouragement -to grow into successful careers and their own mentoring roles," says Maralee Shadle, who funded the Shadle Scholarship annually after her husband's death in 1994. The Frein's gift will endow the scholarship by creating a permanent investment fund, the proceeds of which will be distributed annually to scholarship recipients. Earnings in excess of disbursements will be reinvested, so that over time the fund's value will grow to support even more students. "Harry was a great teacher who really liked kids," said Jim Frein, who now serves on the CoB Dean's Advisory Council. "We hope this scholarship will have a positive impact on students just as his interaction with them did."
