Students Visit Local Company to get a Taste of B2B Marketing

On Feb. 15, approximately 30 marketing major students from the College of Business went on a field trip to Renewable Energy Group (REG), an Ames-based company.  The purpose of the visit was to understand the complicated and exciting nature of Business-to-Business marketing, particularly with non-household products such as biodiesel.  Biodiesel is an advanced biofuel that is a renewable, clean-burning diesel replacement made from agricultural co-products and byproducts such as soybean oil or used cooking oil.

“REG is committed to continue our long-term partnership with Iowa State University,” Jon Scharingson, Executive Director of Sales & Marketing said.  REG moved its headquarters from Ralston, Iowa to Ames in 2007.

Many of the employees at REG are Iowa State alumni, including the presenters: Jon Scharingson, Director, Sales and Marketing; Alicia Clancy, Manager, Corporate Affairs and Tony Spuzello, Team Leader, Sales.

Students learned a lot from the trip and some of them have already applied for jobs with REG.  REG offers internships, both summer and year-round.  REG is one of the top ten employers for the College of Business internships.

More about REG: Renewable Energy Group® is a leading North American biodiesel producer with a nationwide distribution and logistics system. Utilizing an integrated value chain model, Renewable Energy Group is focused on converting natural fats, oils and greases into advanced biofuels. With more than 225 million gallons of owned/operated annual production capacity at biorefineries across the country, REG is a proven biodiesel partner in the distillate marketplace.
For more than a decade, REG has been a reliable supplier of biodiesel which meets or exceeds ASTM quality specifications. We sell REG-9000® biodiesel to distributors so Americans can have cleaner burning fuels that help lessen our dependence on foreign oil. REG-9000® branded biodiesel is distributed in nearly every state in the U.S.
