Undergraduate Newsletter

       Welcome to Fall semester 2012!

The staff of the Union Pacific Undergraduate Programs Office welcomes you to Fall 2012 classes! Whether you are returning for another year or just starting your college adventure in the College of Business, we are eager to assist you in reaching your degree goals.

There are a number of new faces in the office this fall (myself included), and I hope that you get the chance to meet everyone sometime soon.  Melody Schobert and Linda Garbisch joined the staff in early August, and I started in early July. (You may recognize Linda Garbisch from the Department of Residence.)  We are excited to be here and will work to make your interactions with us productive and helpful, along with all our staff.

Invest in your education—soak in all you can in your classes, engage in the academic activity around you, get involved in campus life, try something new to help stretch your mind, body, and spirit.  Iowa State and the College of Business have so much to offer you, but you must take the first step.  Don’t “wish” you had done things differently come the end of the semester.

New students — be sure to attend the New Student Welcome on Aug. 29, sponsored by Business Council.

Everyone — mark your calendars for Business Week (Sept. 19-25) and the Career Fair on Sept. 26.

If there is assistance or guidance that our office can provide, don’t hesitate to ask.  We can provide an ear, direction, answers, and of course, advice!  Please take advantage of the services the College of Business has to offer.  Welcome!

Have a great semester,

Dr. Diann L. Burright

SCM 490: Independent Study in Biodiesel Entrepreneurship (BioBus)

In this 3-credit class, a small group (4-5) of diverse students will work as a team to build a profitable, fully-staffed green business on campus. SCM490 students will be charged with transitioning Iowa State’s widely-recognized BioBus project from a student volunteer workforce, to a permanent and staffed institution. The ISU BioBus project recycles used cooking oil from campus cafeterias into biodiesel fuel for CyRide buses.

Students will:
--learn the fundamental science and business of the existing BioBus project
--be presented with a variety of possible scenarios for its further expansion
--chart a course of action and see it through to execution over the course of the semester

Work will entail:
industry research; meetings with campus authorities and technical experts; finding outside financing; arranging to hire full-time BioBus staff next year, and securing a new safe and workable production facility

The team’s real progress towards these goals will determine their grades. This is an exciting opportunity to experience real green entrepreneurship while still a student. Interested students from all majors are encouraged to apply. No previous experience with biodiesel or business entrepreneurship is required. To apply, please send a one-page letter of intent and current resume ASAP to Dr. David Cantor at [dcantor at iastate.edu] with the subject line, “SCM 490”.
