Master of Science in Information Systems

About the Program

The College of Business offers graduate courses leading to the Master of Science degree in Information Systems (MS-IS). This degree is designed to provide students with a strong set of technical skills in addition to a broad background in business to enable them to develop and manage a full spectrum of IT projects.  The MS-IS is designed as a full-time, residential program offered on the Iowa State campus.

Students in the MS-IS program apply IS theory and concepts to modern IS development through classes that enable students to learn and use the latest software in application projects. The practical training in an internship setting will provide students with exposure to real-world projects. Students graduating from the program will have the advanced technical and managerial skills necessary to obtain employment as a mid-level manager in any one of several organizations.

Applicants should have mastered basic computing skills including programming, databases, and computer organization.  Work experience applying technology to improve business processes is a plus.  Applicants who do not have coursework in IT areas should include their plan to address this in the statement of purpose essay.

The program requires a minimum of 30 credits and completing of a significant project demonstrating mastery of  Information Systems skills and  knowledge (creative component).  Students desiring a more in-depth research experience may indicate their preference for the thesis degree option (a minimum of 33 credits required).  Additionally,  students are encouraged to complete an internship to acquire practical work experience.
