The Ceremony

The Fall 2012 College of Business Graduation will be held in James H. Hilton Coliseum on Friday, December 14, 2012. Seating is unlimited and tickets are not required for admission. Attendance is optional.

The College of Business Graduation will begin promptly at 5:00 p.m. and end in approximately 1 1/2 - 2 hours.  The doors to Hilton will open at 4:00 p.m.  The College Graduation will include greetings from the Dean of the College, comments by a speaker, and individual recognition of students graduating who are in attendance.   At the conclusion of the remarks by the speakers, graduating students will cross the stage as their names are read and be recognized by the Dean and Chair of their department.

Students who have applied to graduate at least three weeks prior to the ceremony will have their name printed in the College of Business program.  Students who have previously earned a degree and have returned for a second major in Business should contact the Undergraduate Programs Office in 1200 Gerdin to have their name appear in the program.

Caps and Gowns

Caps and gowns are required for all graduates participating in the College of Business Graduation. They can be obtained from area businesses (e.g. University Bookstore).

Honors and Distinction Cords

If you are graduating with Honors and/or Distinction please pick up your cords prior to the graduation ceremony.  Honor cords can be picked up from the Jischke Honors Building and the Distinction cords from 210 Enrollment Services Center.

Arriving at Hilton

Students will need to plan to arrive at Hilton Auditorium by 4:30 p.m.  Please check in at the northwest corner of Hilton to pick up your reader card. Please plan enough time to complete your reader card with your mailing address and email address. You will be instructed where to line-up (signs will be posted by major). If you are a double major/degree, you can choose which major you would like to sit/cross the stage with. Do not take a program at the entrance; there will be one for you on your chair. Please leave coats, purses, and other valuables with family or friends.

Crossing the Stage

The most important part of Graduation is the individual recognition of graduates. Only the names of students who are present will be read. Recognition will be by major. If you are a multiple major or multiple degree student, you will be recognized only once. Please decide which major you wish to be recognized for prior to lining up in the processional.  Marshals will lead the graduates to the foot of the stage. The graduates will present their reader cards to the reader at the edge of the stage and each graduate will cross the stage to be recognized by the Dean as his or her name is read. Students will return to their seats after crossing the stage.

College Gift and Diploma

Students who attend the College of Business ceremony will be given a small gift as they cross the stage during the ceremony. Diplomas will not be handed out at the Business ceremony, but rather can be:

  1. Picked up by the graduate in 210 Enrollment Services or

  2. Mailed to the student 2-3 weeks after graduation.

Please contact the Graduation Office if you have questions about your diploma options, 515-294-9372.

Photographs

During the procession, the lights in Hilton will be at full intensity for photographs. Flash attachments are not necessary. High-speed daylight film is recommended for color photography, both still and motion pictures. Family photographs can be taken after the close of the ceremony using the stage as a background for photos, if desired.

Flash Photography will take a photo of each graduate as she/he crosses the stage and is greeted by the Dean. Within 1 week of the ceremony, graduates will receive electronic proofs.  Graduates are able to order photos using an online ordering system.  However, you are under no obligation to order any photos.
