AACSB International Maintenance of Accreditation Review
An AACSB Review Team will visit the Iowa State campus November 8-10 for the College of Business and the department of accounting’s AACSB International Maintenance of Accreditation Review. Thank you in advance for your willingness and flexibility to participate in this very important review of the college. College Research Colloquium

Jing Zhang and Jim McElroy will be the next presenters during the upcoming College Research Colloquium scheduled for November 16 from 11:30 -12:30 in room 3164 Gerdin. Lunch will be provided—please bring your own beverages. RSVP to Julie Lelonek at jlelonek@iastate.edu if you plan to attend. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Sree Nilakanta’s presentation scheduled for November 16th will now be given on February 15th.

Distinguished Scholar Series
In honor of the college's 25th anniversary in 2009-2010, each academic department is hosting a distinguished scholar who will visit the college to interact with its students, faculty, and staff, and make a presentation open to the university community. These visits are scheduled throughout the year.

Business Career Services

In November, Kathy Wieland, Sarah Van Vark, and Tammy Stegman will attend a Recruiting Trends Conference in Chicago, IL.  This conference is hosted by the Midwest Association for Colleges and Employers.  Dr. Phil Gardner, the Principal Investigator with the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University will share information from the most recent Recruiting Trends Survey report.  We will also be visiting Chicagoland employers KPMG and Mercer.

Shoba Premkumar was voted as Teacher of the Month for October. 

Ginka Borisova
presented two papers at the 2009 Financial Management Association meetings: "How does government ownership affect information asymmetry? Evidence from the European Union" (with P. Yadav) and "Cross-listing firms and bonding: Evidence from PIPEs" (with C. Campbell and I. Floros).

LOMIS

Brian Mennecke participated on a panel for the 12th Annual Colloquium for Engineering Education on Friday, October 23.  The panel, entitled “Technology Support for the Global Workforce,” included Sue Bray (Executive Director, New Vistas), Donald G. Fitzpatrick (General Manager, Global Cisco Alliance), Aditya Johri (Assistant Professor, Virginia Tech), Brian Mennecke, and Tony Townsend (moderator)Dr. Mennecke’s presentation was entitled, “New Collaboration Tools and Social Media Strategies for the Organization of Tomorrow.”

Brian Mennecke and Janea Triplett (HCI Doctoral Student) presented the results of funded research at the Deere Day 2009 Forum at the Virtual Reality Applications Center.  The presentation, entitled, “Communication, Command, and Control: A Study of Organizational Communication and Leadership in Online Games,” summarized the results of research funded by Rockwell Collins, Inc.

Amrit Tiwana's paper "Systems Development Ambidexterity: Explaining the Complementary and Substitutive Roles of Formal and Informal Controls" was accepted for publication in Journal of Management Information Systems.

Bobby Martens was voted by the students in the College of Business as the September Teacher of the Month 

Dan Zhu  and her co-author X. Li had their paper titled  "Object Technology Selection" accepted for publication in the Annals of Operations Research, special issue on Management and Service Industries.

Dan Zhu's paper "A Hybrid Approach for Constructing Efficient Assembles", was accepted for publication in Decision Support Systems.  
 
The team of Mike Brower, Christina Demuth, Scott Groth, Nick McCann, Gaya Samarasingha, and Kevin Torno went to the Business International Graduate Logistics Case Competition held at Sam M. Walton College of Business.  The team represented our college with great distinction.  A big thank you to Qing Hu and Ron Ackerman for their commitment to the competition and for committing financial resources to it, Debbie Johnson for helping with all the arrangements and to the MBA core team and faculty members that helped with practice cases. 

Management

Andreas Schwab served as a judge for the 2009 Organization Science/INFORMS Dissertation Proposal Competition at the INFORMS Annual Conference in San Diego, CA. 

Marketing

Kay Palan had a paper accepted in Journal of Current Issues in Research and Advertising, titled "Agentic and Communal Orientation: Multinational Analysis of Gender Portrayal in Children's Television Commercials."  The paper is co-authored with Dr. Aysen Bakir, Illinois State University.

ISU ADVANCE Lunchtime Discussion on ISU Resources and Policies that Support Faculty Flexibility

Dr. Mary Harris, faculty fellow in 2008-09, will report on her work on faculty flexibility, which supports the theme for the ISU ADVANCE Program last year, "Recruiting the Best: The Role of Work-life Flexibility." Mary will lead a lunchtime discussion for the campus community, during which she will present resources that are available to ISU faculty including policies and guidelines for increased flexibility to balance work/life demands.
