Managing the Supply Chain – Different Industry Perspectives

The Voorhees Distinguished Lecture Series was established by alumni and friends of Iowa State University to honor the career of Professor Emeritus R. Dale Voorhees.


Karen L. Alber, CFPIM, is Vice President, Integrated Business Solutions for the Quaker Oats Company, a division of PepsiCo. She has held positions of increasing responsibility in Plant Operations, Production Planning, Purchasing, Supply Chain Implementation, Internal Consulting, and Enterprise Systems. Karen’s areas of expertise include supply chain strategy, enterprise solutions, change management, performance measurement, process improvement, and supply chain synchronization. Karen speaks at national conferences, workshops, and industry functions, and is often cited in trade publications.


She is an active member of APICS and the Educational Society for Resource Management. She conducted research in a practitioner/academic partnership on Supply Chain Management for the APICS E & R Foundation Research Paper Series under the title: “Supply Chain Management: Balancing The Supply Chain with Customer Demand”. She has had articles in such publications as Consumer Goods Technology, APICS Performance Advantage, and the Production and Inventory Management Journal.

David Reiff joined Wal-Mart in 1985 as a management trainee in the logistics division. He has served in a variety of positions including Distribution Center General Manager, Regional Manager, and Vice President, Private Fleet. He is now the Vice President of Transportation.


Dave is active in several business and professional associations. He is a member of the IMRA, American Trucking Associations, National Private Truck Council, and the Council of Logistics Management. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Trucking Association.


Dave has a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Transportation and Logistics from Iowa State University.

Steven W. Robinson is i2’s Executive Vice President of Product Marketing. He is responsible for i2’s global inbound and outbound product marketing efforts, release management, and overall product strategy. Robinson began his career at i2 as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Fulfillment Matrix, where he was responsible for launching a horizontal marketplace focusing on providing clients many-to-many total order management, as well as end-to-end order fulfillment. In January of 2001, this work expanded into a full-fledged line of business for i2, and became what is now i2’s CRM application offerings. As Executive Vice President of the CRM business unit, his P&L responsibilities include the oversight of all development, operations, and marketing for the Distributed Order Management, Fulfillment, Intelligent Selling, and Decision Support applications.


Steve came to i2 from Wal-Mart Corporation where he last served as vice president of Global Logistics. He also served as Vice President of Supply Chain Management, Vice President of Corporate Traffic, Vice President of Merchandise Logistics, and Director of Administration of the Wal-Mart private fleet. Prior to Wal-Mart, Steve spent 18 years mastering all aspects of transportation by providing his leadership talents to many roles for several tier-one firms such as United Parcel Service, Roadway Express, and Consolidated Freightways.

Steve holds a Bachelor of Science in Business from Ohio State University. He was also involved in the Penn State Program for Supply and Logistics Professionals, the Texas A&M Program for Strategic Retailing, and obtained a Georgia Tech Financial Logistics Certificate.
