Policies
Class Attendance Policy
It is the policy of Business Career Services that classes and academic success come first in the lives of students. When scheduling interviews with companies, please make every attempt to schedule at times that do not conflict with classes. Companies are generally flexible about interview scheduling.
Business Career Services "No Show Policy"
A scheduled interview is a professional commitment. If you, as a student, do not show up for a prearranged interview or do not give us at least 2 business days' notice of your intention not to take an interview, we consider this a "no-show". After the first missed interview or mock interview, interviewing privileges will be suspended until you bring a letter of apology with a stamped, addressed envelope to Business Career Services in 1320 Gerdin Business Building for mailing or e-mail an apology letter directly to the employer with a copy to buscs@iastate.edu. At that point, access to ISU CMS will be reactivated. Should you miss another interview, your use of ISU CMS will be deactivated until you make an appointment to speak with the Director of Business Career Services.
Policy on Accepting Job Offers and Continuing to Job Search
It is advised that it is in poor professional form to continue to job search after one has accepted a job offer. Employers take a harsh view of a student who accepts a position and later declines. This action has a term called "reneging". Acceptance of a job offer constitutes ceasing all job searching activities including resume submission, further interviewing, etc. If, as a student, you are not prepared to work for the company that makes you a job offer, respectfully decline the offer in a timely manner and continue your job search. Business Career Services is happy to advise students as it relates to issues of job search, negotiation and the like.
Policy on Posting Positions
In accordance with the National Association of Colleges and Employers Guide to Ethical and Legal Standards in Student Hiring, Business Career Services is committed to maintaining a recruiting process that is fair and equitable to students and employing organizations. To that end, all employers wishing to identify College of Business students utilizing Business Career Services must post positions within Iowa State University Career Management Services (ISU CMS). This practice ensures compliance with NACE guidelines as well as federal law. Business Career Services and its personnel will not engage in any practice that operates outside of this policy. For more information on NACE guidelines, please source www.naceweb.org. For more information regarding federal employment law, please source www.dol.gov.
E-mail Policy
When contacting Business Career Services staff by e-mail, you can generally expect a response within 48 hours. If you do not hear back in that amount of time or your need is urgent, please call 515-294-2542.
College of Business Supports Campus Recruiters Participation in the Classroom.
The College of Business encourages and supports interaction between campus recruiters and college faculty members. Individual faculty members frequently host employers in their classrooms. Those organizations wishing to participate in classroom situations should recognize that any material presented in such forums should correspond/compliment the classroom curriculum. Company “commercials”, where the bulk of the material covered is focused on marketing the organization, are not recommended nor allowed. When reaching out to faculty members of the college, employers should plan to prepare presentations that will support the material of the course. For those campus recruiters who wish to promote their company, it is recommended that to host an information sessions coordinated by the Memorial Union and marketed via ISU CMS (The College of Business job posting board). Student organizations may also be a venue for such presentations, but it should be mutually agreed upon by the organization and the company that this presentation will primarily promote the firm. Additionally, any “recruiting” activities, i.e., resume collections, sharing of job postings, etc., should be coordinated with Business Career Services. Engaging in recruitment activities in classroom situations which might be outside of standard recruitment practices may jeopardize the employer’s compliance with EEO and/or DOL obligations.
