Ottumwa Business Chosen for America’s SBDC Iowa Award

Polar Xpress chosen as Small Business of the Month

AMES, Iowa – America’s SBDC Iowa is pleased to announce that Sandra Hendred, owner, Polar Xpress, Ottumwa, is the winner of the SBDC’s Business of the Month Award.

Bryan Ziegler, regional director of the Indian Hills SBDC, Ottumwa, says, “Sandra was the ideal client because she asked the right questions, completed the planning process, and then implemented the plan she wrote.”

Polar Xpress is Ottumwa’s first frozen yogurt shop. Sandra Henderson started the shop after first renovating a vacant building in the downtown area. The SBDC helped her get the loan that she needed to start the business. She also received help from the local SCORE chapter and the Chamber of Commerce. The business is well received in the area as evidenced by its sales results. She has also hired local students to help run the business. Polar Xpress is open yearround and serves 15 flavors and 30 toppings for customers to personalize their treats.

The Business of the Month Award will be presented to Sandra in Ottumwa by SBDC Regional Director Bryan Ziegler, who nominated her for the award. For more information on Polar Xpress, visit its Facebook page at
