A new report in the Transportation Journal lists Iowa State seventh in the world for “publication productivity in the Supply Chain Management discipline” from 2011-2013.

The study, conducted during three-year periods, listed Iowa State as 16th for the 2008-2010 period. The rankings are based on the number of publications each institution produced in the top six supply chain management and logistics journals.

Iowa State supply chain management faculty members have been studying important research topics in supply chain management practices, which impact businesses in many ways. Their research relates to environmental impacts, risk management, security, performance, innovation, integration, research trends in supply chain management, and behavioral issues in supply chain management. Research also includes transportation issues, such as truck driver turnover and transportation safety.

College of Business Raisbeck Endowed Dean, David Spalding, said he couldn’t have been more excited when he learned about the ranking. “This is outstanding news for so many reasons,” he said. “This is important for students who have an interest in supply chain management, for future faculty members who may work here, for businesses who partner with us and, more importantly, our faculty. This ranking shows the world what we already know — that we have internationally-known, high caliber faculty who are publishing important research in the highest academic journals.”

This is an exciting time to be in supply chain, Spalding said.

“Iowa State is the only college or university in Iowa that offers a supply chain management degree, so we are excited to grow in this area,” Spalding said. “We just hired four new supply chain instructors. Also, Jackie Rees Ulmer was hired as our new Supply Chain and Information Systems chair. Jackie came to us in July from Purdue University and is ready to take supply chain to the next level.”

Supply chain management represents a critical function for any business, with responsibility for sourcing, production, and distribution of goods and services. Supply chain is the fastest growing major at the Iowa State College of Business.
