Happy New Year! Thanks to all of you who made my first few months at Iowa State go very smoothly. I also want to thank everyone who participated in the fall College of Business graduation ceremony on December 20. This is a very special moment for our students and their families and your presence means a great deal.

Won No paper (co-authored with Glen Gray and David Miller) entitled “Internal Auditors’ Experiences and Opinions Regarding Green IT: Assessing the Gap in Normative and Positive Perspectives” has been accepted in the Journal of Information Systems.
Diane Janvrin’s paper, co-authored with Jim Bierstaker (Villanova University) and Jordan Lowe (Arizona State University) and titled ‘What factors influence auditors’ use of computer-assisted audit technology?’ has been accepted for publication in Advances in Accounting
On December 20, 2013, the Department of Accounting held its Eleventh Annual Contemporary Issues in Accounting Conference. The Gerdin Business Building welcomed over 100 accounting professionals from all over the state of Iowa to earn 8 continuing education hours. Presenting this year were Jim Cannon, Bill Dilla, Diane Janvrin, Cyndie Jeffrey, Abhi Rao, Melvin Lamboy-Ruiz, & Won No. Coordinating the conference were Jan Duffy and Elizabeth Salton.
Business Career Services
Melanie Gella (MBA, 2012) joined our staff in December! Melanie will be working with the finance and business economics students and faculty as well as teaching sections of Careers in Business and Professional Employment Preparation. Melanie worked closely with our office when she was an MBA student and taught several sections of the Careers in Business and Professional Employment Preparation courses.
Tammy Stegman will present to 75 students on the topic of Networking for Success at the 2013 Women’s Leadership Retreat at Hach Hall on January 11, 2014.
Spring 2014 Career Week – Important Dates
Mock Interview Day will be held on Wednesday, February 5 in Business Career Services. Students can sign up for a mock interview in CyHire starting on January 13.
The 2014 Spring Business, Industry & Technology Career Fair will be held on Wednesday, February 12 in Hilton Coliseum (12:00-6:00 PM). There will also be a networking reception held after the career fair in Johnny’s. Please consider inviting a career services staff member into your class to briefly share information about the career fair to your students.
Interview Day will be held in the Memorial Union on Thursday, February 13. Students can apply for on campus recruiting positions in CyHire and meet with employers at the career fair to be considered for their opportunities.
The Career Week Speakers Series for students in the College of Business will be held Wednesday, February 5 – Tuesday, February 11. There will be over 15 sessions presented by company representatives and business career services staff. Watch for specific program titles, times and location details coming soon. Information will be sent to you for sharing in your classes.
Fred Hood’s co-authored paper “SOX, corporate transparency, and the cost of debt” was published in the Journal of Banking & Finance 38 (2014) p145-165. It was a January publication. Co-authors are Sandro C. Andrade (University of Miami) and Gennaro Bernile (Singapore Management University).
Fred Hood presented his solo authored paper, “Leverage, Default Risk, and the Cross-Section of Equity and Firm Returns” on December 19, 2013at the Australasian Banking and Finance Conference in Sydney, Australia.
Valentina Salotti and Kenneth Carow (Indiana University) had their paper titled “The U.S. Treasury’s capital purchase program. Treasury’s selectivity and market returns across weak and healthy banks” accepted for publication at the Journal of Financial Research.
S. Arunachalam was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award. Each Teaching Excellence Award consists of a letter of commendation from the ISU President, a certificate of achievement signed by the ISU President and the Graduate Dean, and an honor cord to be worn at graduation. The purpose of this award is to recognize and encourage outstanding achievement by graduate students in teaching. Up to 10% of graduate students in teaching each year are recognized. Congratulations Arun!
Mark Peterson presented at MBA Career Services and Employer Alliance’s winter professional development and networking event in December. The event was hosted by Emory University Goizueta Business School, Atlanta, and was attended by 50+ MBA career services professionals and MBA employers from the US and Europe. Peterson also presided over the organization’s bi-annual board of directors meeting, held in tandem with the event. Peterson is currently president of the MBA CSEA board.
David King was elected to serve as the Associate Program Chair for the Strategic Management Society’s Teaching Community. His initial responsibilities include organizing two sessions for the Teaching Community’s program at the 2014 annual conference in Madrid, Spain. He will then transition to the Program Chair in 2015, and the Chair in 2016, or his selection represents a three-year commitment.
Andreas Schwab served together with Dean Shepard (University of Indiana) and Frederic Delmar (Lund University) as key note speakers at the 2013 Research Workshop of the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship at the Queensland University of Technology/Australia, December 17-19, 2013.
Stephen Kim is appointed to serve on a selection panel for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme by Research Grants Council of Hong Kong.
Zhengrui Jiang has been appointed an associate editor for MIS Quarterly, a premier journal of Information Systems. His term starts January 2014.
Course Registration Reminders:
- Prerequisites for spring College of Business courses have been monitored over the winter break. Students who are in violation of a prereq have been notified and will be notified again on January 10th. Instructors will receive a list of students who remain in violation before the semester begins and we ask that you follow-up with these students about their missing prereq if/when they attend your class(es).
- Please note that Business faculty cannot sign students into Business classes using an add slip. Refer students to Sarah Wilson in 1200 Gerdin to assist in the registration of Business courses.
- Registration for Business classes will remain open on AccessPlus through the 5th day of the term (Friday, January 17). On the 6th day, class registration will close and courses may only be added in 1200 Gerdin with special permission. If you have other wishes (e.g. no adds after the 2nd class meeting, adds are okay until the end of week 2, etc.), please contact email@example.com
- Do you know of any students who would make a great Business Ambassador and loves their major and experience at ISU? Do you know students who like being involved on campus and meeting new people?
