Dean’s Message

Annual College of Business Picnic
The annual College of Business Picnic will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Maple Shelter at Brookside Park in Ames, IA. Please mark your calendars and more information will follow. We hope to see you and your family at the picnic!


Todd Thornock’s paper, “The effects of task outcome feedback and broad domain evaluation experience on the use of unique scorecard measures” (with Kip Krumwiede, Monte Swain, and Dennis Eggett) has been accepted in Advances in Accounting.


The paper titled ‘Pro forma Accounting Disclosures: The Effect of Reconciliations and Financial Reporting Knowledge on Nonprofessional Investors’ Judgments’ co-authored by Diane Janvrin, Bill Dilla and Cyndie Jeffrey was accepted for publication at Advances in Accounting.

Business Career Services

NACE Annual Conference
While attending the National Association of Employers and Colleges (NACE) conference in Orlando, FL., Kathy, Meredith, Sarah, and Tammy had the opportunity to meet with employers from: Hormel and Transamerica and career services leaders from UAB, University of Oklahoma, University of Texas-Austin, The University of Iowa, and University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign.


Employers Circle
Business Career Services will host the 8th Annual Employers Circle July 30 at the Alumni Center. The Employers Circle will include our staff and representatives from the top hiring organizations for the College of Business. If you have interest in engaging with our top recruiters, please let us know and we can include you in our lunch plans.


Career Coordinator Hiring
Business Career Services is starting the process of hiring an additional Career Coordinator to aid in the delivery of BUS AD 203X (Careers in Business and Professional Employment Preparation) and to support a case load of student/alumni job seekers.  This position, a Program Coordinator I, will be posted on the ISU job board within the next couple weeks.  If you know of candidates that may be a fit for the role, please have the individual watch for the posting and contact us if they have questions.

• Mock Interview Day for College of Business students is Wednesday, September 18th
• Business Week 2013 will be September 18th-25th (The Speaker Series programming will be announced in early September)
• The Business, Industry, and Technology Career Fair is on Wednesday, September 25 in Hilton Coliseum from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.


The paper “The Value of Financing through Cross-Border Asset Sales:  Shareholder Returns and Liquidity” by Ginka Borisova, Kose John, and Valentina Salotti has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Corporate Finance.

  Graduate Programs

Jenny Reitano attended the GMAC Conference in Vancouver, Canada June 18-22.


Jenny Reitano represented the College of Business at the Leadership Iowa Graduation in Okoboji, IA on June 14.


The PhD Program is featured in the current issue of Forward, which is the ISU Foundation’s magazine on page 7.


David R. King, (2013) “Managing uncertainty: lessons from Xenophon’s retreat”, Journal of Management History, Vol. 19 Iss: 3, pp.377 – 393


“Engagement in Environmental Behaviors Among Supply Chain Management Employees: An Organizational Support Theoretical Perspective”, which appeared in the July 2012 issue of Journal of Supply Chain Management, was recently selected by that journal for a virtual issue on sustainable supply chain management. The virtual issue is available here. The authors are Dave Cantor, Paula Morrow and Frank Montabon.

Undergraduate Programs

During the month of June, The Undergraduate Programs Office hosted over 515 F13 incoming freshmen/752 family members and guests for orientation and over 92 transfer students.  (The freshman numbers have increased by 82 students, and transfer numbers have increased (so far) by 22 from summer 2012).  Approximately 245 freshman students have signed up for Business Learning Teams.  We’d like to thank:  Kathy Wieland, Tammy Stegman, Corey Peacock, Danny Johnson, Brad Shrader, Rick Smith, Ginka Borisova, Russ Laczniak, Samantha Cross, Sekar Raju, Michael Bootsma, Sree Nilakanta, and Dan Zhu for being available to meet with orientation students and their families.


Also, thanks to Travis Sapp, Jamie Brown, Russ Laczniak, Sree Nilakanta, Laura Smarandescu, Pol Hermann, Ginka Borisova, Samantha Cross, Dan Zhu and Wei Zhang for meeting with Prospective Students and their families during June and Elizabeth Salton’s assistance with events.


Special thanks to our 4 fantastic Cyclone Aides who also assisted us during summer orientation:  Matt Winkleblack (Mgmt), CJ Judd (P Bus), Jamie Chamberlain (Mkt) and Gennaro Barbato (Fin).  These four business students represented the College, ISU, and themselves in wonderful fashion, and we couldn’t have done orientation without their assistance.  When you see these students in your classes this fall, please give them your appreciation—they represent the kind of student we are proud to call business students!


Since June 12, Brenda Thorbs-Weber has met weekly with College of Business students who are participating in the summer APEX program.  The students are enrolled in classes this summer and will continue as freshmen in Business in fall.


Summer EIS (Experience Iowa State) programs will be held on July 22, 26, 29, and August 2.
