College of Business Faculty and Staff Awards
Please save the date—this year’s ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 18 from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. in 0119 Gerdin with a reception immediately following in the Bergstrom Commons.

 

Lunch Meeting with Mike
The first “Lunch Meeting with Mike” for the spring semester is scheduled for Monday, March 25, 2013 from 12:00-1:00 in the Schaller Seminar Room, 3164 Gerdin Business Building. This is your opportunity to hear about the state of the college and ask questions of the dean. This is a brown-bag lunch – beverages will be provided.

March College Research Colloquium
David Cantor and Frank Montabon will be presenting as well as Joey George and Emily Kohnke at the March 13 College Research Colloquium. The presentations will be held from 11:30 – 12:20 p.m. in room 3164 Gerdin Business Building.  Lunch will be provided – please RSVP to Deborah Martinez by March 8 at dmm@iastate.edu.

 

Qing Hu and Laura Smarandescu as well as Dan Zhu are the scheduled presenters for the March 27 College Research Colloquium.  The presentations will be held from 11:30 – 12:30 p.m. in room 3164 Gerdin Business Building. Planned Power Outage on March 22
Due to electrical work associated with the remodeling of Curtis Hall, there will be a planned power outage on March 22nd that will also affect the entire Gerdin Business Building. All power will be out and business will be closed that day until the power is turned back on.

 

Dean’s Office Spring Break Hours
CORRECTION

For the Spring Break period, March 18-22, the Dean’s Office hours will be 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 8:00  – 5:00 p.m.

Accounting

Won No presented a paper (co-authored with Efrim Boritz) entitled “The Quality of Interactive Data: XBRL versus Compustat, Yahoo Finance, and Google Finance” at the American Accounting Association 2013 Information Systems Section Midyear Meeting, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

 

Cyndie Jeffrey has joined the Editorial Board of Behavioral Research in Accounting, a journal published by the American Accounting Association.

Business Career Services

Thank you to the faculty and staff for their support of these events for our students in the College of Business. Your attendance at the Career Week events, Pre-night’s, Leadership Breakfast, Career Fair and the Networking reception are all appreciated.

 

150 organizations participated in the Career Fair to recruit College of Business students (up 22% from Spring 2012). There were 1162 College of Business students that attended the career fair (up 10.7% from Spring 2012).

 

74 students participated in our Mock Interview Day on February 6th. For Interview Day, the day after the Career Fair, there were 360 interviews conducted (+30.9% from Spring 2012). 379 students attended the career-related presentations during Career Week 2013.

 

This time of year, students are busy interviewing for internships and full-time positions. As you talk with students, please encourage them to submit salary offers, acceptances, and employment information to Business Career Services and to meet with us if they are having difficulty finding a job or internship.

 

Tammy Stegman attended a company tour and visit to REG with Wei Zhang’s marketing classes on February 15.

 

In addition to the Career Fair, our staff visited with the following employers: Victualic Company of America, Gainlight Studios, Cognizant, John Morrell, ISN and Hotwire as new recruiters.

  Executive in Residence

A reminder that next week (March 3-7) we will be hosting Diego Veitia an ISU alum and founder/past chairman of INTL FCStone (presently #30 on the Fortune 500) as our 2013 Executive in Residence. During this time, he will be visiting with many faculty, staff, and students. He will give a public lecture at the Reiman Entrepreneurial Speaker Series

on Tuesday, March 5 at 11:30 a.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Please visit the web site to register, and plan to attend. He will also be working out of Room 2217 in the Cox Dean’s Suite.

  Graduate Programs

As of February 25, 65% of the May 2013 graduating MBA class have received at least one job offer. Additionally, 65% of the first-year MBA class has reported receiving at least one internship offer. There is a significant amount of recruiting activity for the MBA and other graduate programs; March is typically a busy month for second-interviews and offers. Please direct any questions to Mark Peterson in the Graduate Programs Office.

Andreas Schwab presented a paper titled “Multilevel Research: How Dialectic Tensions and Co-Evolutionary Interdependences Drive Long-Term Learning in Organizational Fields” at the INFORMS/Organization Science Winter Conference on February 9, 2013.

 

Andreas Schwab together with Rene Bakker, Joris Knoben & Leon Oerlemans received the Outstanding Paper on Small Enterprise Research Award for their presentation “Alternative Modes of Entrepreneurial Opportunity Exploitation: The Case of Inter-Organizational Projects” at the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research Exchange (ACERE) Conference, Brisbane, Australia, February 5-8, 2013.

Clottey, T. and Benton, W.C. “Guidelines for Improving the Power Values of Statistical Tests for Non-response Bias Assessment in OM Research”, forthcoming in Decision Sciences.

 

Tony Townsend and Brian Mennecke are co-PI’s on a $171,214 grant funded by the State of Nebraska. The Rural Futures Institute (RFI) Research & Engagement grant is entitled Entrepreneurship Based Economic Development and will involve studying and applying a strategic model to encourage entrepreneurial activities by small and medium sized businesses. Other co-investigators on the grant include Robert Bernier (PI), Roni Reiter-Palmon, Erin Pleggenkuhle-Miles, and Sara McMillan.

 

One of Brian Mennecke’s Human Computer Interaction doctoral students, Anicia Peters, presented a paper at the 6th ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing in San Antonio, TX (held February 23-27).  The paper, which is co-authored with Brian Mennecke and Heike Winschiers-Theophilus, is entitled Bridging the Digital Divide through Facebook Friendships: A Cross-Cultural Study, and compares and contrasts attitudes held about Facebook by users in the US and Africa. 

 

Ph.D. Program

David Correll won the “The Live Green Award for Excellence in Sustainability” awarded by the university and signed by President Leath. The Live Green Awards for Excellence in Sustainability recognize Iowa State University faculty, staff, and students who are making an impact on the campus sustainability efforts by generating awareness and interest through initiatives that focus on teaching, research, outreach and/or operations.

Undergraduate Programs

Registration for summer and fall 2013 begins the week after spring break. Seniors will begin registering on Tuesday, March 26th, and registration will continue for all students through the week of April 16.

 

Please remember that Business faculty cannot sign students into Business classes. Registration for classes will remain open on AccessPlus though the 5th day of the term. If you have a student approach you to get into your class, please refer them to AccessPlus or have them see Sarah Wilson in 1200 Gerdin for assistance.
