About the College

Established in 1984, the College of Business has a fall 2015 enrollment of 4,485 students (4,161 undergraduate students, 324 graduate students).


The College of Business is accredited by AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, which accredits less than five percent of business schools worldwide.


U.S. News & World Report Rankings (2014-2015 rankings):

  • The College of Business undergraduate program ranked 79th among 508 (top 16%) U.S. business programs accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

  • The College of Business undergraduate program is also 50th among public universities.

  • The College of Business graduate program ranked 73rd out of 453 (just outside the top 15%) AACSB-accredited graduate programs, and 39th among public universities. The part-time MBA program ranked 146th overall, and 85th among public universities.

  • Iowa State University ranked 47th among 173 best public national universities that grant doctoral degrees.

  • Iowa State ranked 101st in the “Best National Universities” category, which contains 281 American universities that offer a wide range of undergraduate majors, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees.

The Gerdin Business Building, which opened in 2004, provides a high-tech home for the College of Business. The 111,000-square foot building, located on a campus recognized as one of the most beautiful in the nation, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Sophisticated computer labs and our wireless computer accessibility have resulted in Intel’s ranking Iowa State 20th in its top 100 “Most Unwired College Campuses” survey.


Undergraduate Programs

Through department and College scholarships, over $603,000 was awarded to College of Business students during the 2014-2015 academic year.

  • Average scholarship awarded was over $1,800 in 2014-2015. 

Our outstanding Accounting program has passing rates on all four sections of the CPA exam consistently rank Iowa State in the top five among universities across the nation, according to the Candidate Performance on Uniform CPA Examination.


Graduate Programs

The Iowa State MBA program was ranked 62nd out of 433 AACSB-accredited graduate programs, and 29th among public universities in the US News and World Report rankings for 2010.


In fall 2015, 324 students were enrolled in College of Business graduate programs. The college offers the following graduate programs:

  • Full-time MBA

  • Part-time MBA program (evenings in Des Moines)

  • Master of Accounting

  • MS in Information Systems

  • The department of SCIS is a participating department in several interdepartmental programs including the MS in Information Assurance, the MS and PhD in Human Computer Interaction, and the MS in Transportation.

The college’s MBA program was ranked third in US News & World Report’s 2011 rankings of placement rates. The story, “10 Business Schools That Lead to Jobs,” cites the program’s 96.3 percent of graduates who were employed within three months of graduation.


Our graduate programs were ranked among the country’s least expensive public graduate business schools in a pair of July 2011 US News & World Report rankings. Ours is the third-least expensive public graduate business school for in-state students, and the fifth-least expensive for out-of-state students.


The College of Business is home to the two-time defending champions of the Big 12 MBA Case Competition. Student teams from Big 12 schools analyze a Harvard-style business case study and present their recommendations to judges. Click for more details on the competitions from 2011 and 2010.


The college’s PhD in Business and Technology program launched in fall 2009.


Business Career Services

Business Career Services brought 324 employers to campus to recruit students during 2013-2014, its most recent reporting year.


The internship/co-op program reported 930 College of Business students on internship sites during 2013-2014.



In November 2011, a team of College of Business seniors in accounting were named among three finalists in the 2011 Accounting Competition hosted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. They competed against more than 200 schools nationwide. 


A May 2009 paper titled, “Accounting Program Research Rankings by Topical Area and Methodology” by Joshua Coyne, Scott Summers, Brady Williams, and David Wood of Brigham Young University ranked Iowa State’s accounting department 29th in accounting information systems research and 30th in experimental research among accounting research programs.



Roger Stover, professor of finance and Iowa Bankers Fellow, was recently recognized among the 200 “Most Prolific Authors in the 7 leading Finance Journals.” Dr. Stover was number 196 which was within the top one percent from a total of 17,601 authors’ records examined from 1959-2008.


Iowa State University undergraduate students are the two-time defending champions in the annual Krause Challenge investment competition. The 2010-2011 class posted a 36.95 return on its investments to beat out the University of Iowa, Drake University, and the University of Northern Iowa.


Cynthia Campbell, associate professor, and Arnie Cowan, associate professor and Ganoe Faculty Fellow of Finance, have shared duties as co-editors of the Financial Review since 2003.



Marc Anderson, assistant professor of management, serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Management Studies and Management Communication Quarterly.


Pol Herrmann, the John and Deborah Ganoe Professor, serves on the editorial board of Management International Review.


Andreas Schwab, associate professor of management, serves on the editorial boards of the Organization Science, the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and the Journal of Small Business Management. He is a representative-at-large for the Research Method Division of the Academy of Management and for the Research Method Community of the Strategic Management Society.


Howard Van Auken, the Bob and Kay Smith Fellow in Entrepreneurship, serves as associate editor of the Journal of Small Business Management. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Small Business Strategy, Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Management, and the Journal of Entrepreneurship and Business.


Howard Van Auken was named a Justin G. Longenecker Fellow at the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) Conference in January 2009. He served as president of USASBE in 2003, program chair in 2004, and vice president in subsequent years.


Robby White was awarded the 2010 Wiley-Blackwell Management and Organization Review Young Scholar Award given at the 2010 International Association for Chinese Management Research Conference.


Jing Zhang sits on the editorial board of Long Range Planning.


James McElroy, the Raisbeck Professor in Business, serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Managerial Issues and the Journal of Behavioral and Applied Management.

W. Roy Johnson, associate professor, serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Psychology.


James Werbel, professor, is chief editor of the Journal of Managerial Issues, and serves on the editorial boards of Human Resources Management and Human Resources Management Review.



A paper by co-authored by Sridhar Ramaswami, Dean’s Faculty Fellow in Marketing, titled “Market-based capabilities and financial performance of firms: insights into marketing’s contribution to firm value” in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science received the Sheth Foundation Best Paper Award for 2009, awarded by the journal’s Editorial Review Board.


Steve Kim, Dean’s Faculty Fellow in Marketing, sits on the editorial boards of Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of International Business Studies, and Journal of Business Research.


Russ Laczniak, the John and Connie Stafford Fellow in Business, sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Advertising, Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising, Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, and the International Journal of Advertising.


Sekar Raju, assistant professor of marketing, sits on the editorial board of Social Influence.


Sanjeev Agarwal, professor of marketing, serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Asia-Pacific Business, Journal of International Business Studies, and Advances in International Marketing.


Management Information Systems

The MIS program is ranked 24th among the top 100 Schools in the world in academic research during 2007-2009 based on publications in the top two premier journals, and 27th based on publications in the top three premier journals of the information systems discipline, according to the Association for Information Systems web site.


An interdepartmental masters and PhD degree in Human Computer Interaction was created in fall 2003. This program, one of the first of its kind in the country, trains researchers and practitioners to apply technology to business in areas such as designing user interfaces for database systems or developing systems allowing people to improve their interactions with technology.


Supply Chain Management

A recent article in Transportation Journal analyzed logistics research published in the four leading academic journals in the field. Seven current and former College of Business faculty members are listed among the 50 most productive researchers from more than 2,000 authors who have published in these four journals since their inception. Additionally, Iowa State was recognized (with Michigan State and Ohio State) as one of three university “thought centers” for logistics research.


A recent article in Supply Chain Management Review, Iowa State’s logistics and supply chain program was ranked as 7th by academic respondents and 14th by practitioner respondents, with an overall weighted ranking of 12th in North America.


Mike Crum,Vice President for Economic Development and Business Engagement, was listed among the most published faculty in the MS/POM field between 1985 and 2008, ranked at 66th, according to a research posted on the Journal of Operations Management web site in 2008.


Mike Crum serves as an associate editor for Journal of Business Logistics. He also serves on the editorial boards of International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management (and emeritus co-editor) and Transportation Journal.



Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship



Iowa State University was honored with the National Model Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program Award at the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) Conference in January 2009. USASBE presents this award to the undergraduate entrepreneurship program that best reflects innovation, quality, comprehensiveness, sustainability, transferability, depth of support, and impact. Iowa State was one of the first institutions to offer an interdisciplinary Minor in Entrepreneurial Studies. Today, the minor draws a record number of students, with the introductory course serving more than 300 students each year.


The Entrepreneurship & Innovation Learning Community provides a unique residential learning experience to 30 students annually from across campus who have an interest in entrepreneurship. The Barista Café, opened in 2007, provides students the opportunity to be shareholders and managers in their own business.


The Center assists many of the premier technology-based startup companies in Iowa. In the five years of the Pappajohn Business Plan Competition, the ISU Center’s clients have won 11 of the 16 top places, including five first-place positions.


The Center serves as a gateway for application to the Wellmark Venture Fund. Since 2004, the Wellmark Venture Fund has provided $1.3 million of financing to early-stage companies.


Iowa Small Business Development Centers (SBDC)


Iowa’s Small Business Development Center program is the only nationally-accredited entrepreneurial development organization in Iowa. Its 16 regional business assistance centers are located strategically across the state and play a key role in Iowa State’s land-grant mission by extending the College of Business directly into the business communities in all 99 Iowa counties. Along with transferring business, management, and entrepreneurial development knowledge to small business owners and entrepreneurs, assistance in the commercialization of University intellectual property is also included within our entrepreneurial development function. All of this helps create an economically stronger and healthier Iowa.


In the last six years, Iowa SBDC clients have raised over $330 million in new capital, started over 900 new businesses, created over 6,600 new jobs, retained over 2,700 existing jobs, and had sales increases in excess of $123 million. During this same six years, the Iowa SBDC network spent 78,690 hours counseling 15,172 clients and held 1,782 training workshops attended by over 24,225 people.


In addition to its basic business counseling and training, the Iowa SBDC has an International Trade Center that offers counseling and training for small businesses in areas of export development, export opportunity identification, and export compliance. The International Trade Center’s needs-based training helps Iowa businesses assess whether they are ready to export their products and services.


Iowa is home to approximately 100,000 small businesses. Many of these businesses are owned by people nearing retirement age and who do not have a succession plan for their business. To address this challenge, the Iowa SBDCs are offering business succession counseling and training to educate Iowa’s small business owners on the importance of good succession planning. Along with knowledge, counseling and mentoring, the program offers additional resources to help owners successfully transfer their businesses.
